Prayer and Fasting

Starting a “open ended” time of Seeking God.

Prayer and fasting have always been foundational in the life of biblical believers. Prayer and fasting is part of the “normal lifestyle” for Christian believers. Seeking God never goes out of fashion.

Join with me in a fast, lets Seek the Lord and see what He might say or do…

Perhaps a few simple basics for those who are new to fasting…

Fasting is clearly biblical, was practised by men and women of God in the entire bible. Practised extensively by Jesus and His Disciples in the book of Acts. Prayer and Fasting preceded every major decision in the book of Acts. It has been practised throughout history by any and every significant man or women of God. Prayer and Fasting has been the foundation of EVERY significant move of God on this planet.

How to start…

  • make time for it…
  • set up your worship music, get out your bible, a note book, a pen and whatever study aides you like to use…
  • and simply start…
    • have no agenda other than to seek God, I always find reading the psalms out loud a great way to start, but there is no right and wrong way…I will bounce around between reading the bible, writing notes, worship, praying in tongues and praying with my understanding…just let it all go, let it be natural, be noisy, be quite…and just focus on God…
    • when God speaks and you get revelation, follow it for a while, write your notes, go to the bible and then just start again…
    • let the Holy Spirit lead you, just get into the flow of the Spirit and go with the flow to where ever God wants to take you…

In the bible Prayer always goes with Fasting, without Prayer, Fasting is just a diet. Often we are told to use Wisdom when we are Fasting, and I do sort of understand this, but don’t let a fear based form of Wisdom tell you that you cannot Fast…everyone can and should Fast. Modern Fasting is often the abstinence from a particular thing like perhaps coffee, T.V or social media…I understand the concept, but biblical prayer and fasting is NO FOOD, some times only water to drink. Let’s not get into the habitat of watering the bible down to suit our own preferences…let the bible determine our preferences.

If you genuinely have a medical condition, then yes, seek advice from a professional medical practitioner, but don’t let this determine how you practice your faith, don’t let this determine your theologies for you. Ease into a fast, especially if you think it will be a long one. Drop certain food types first for a few days, then maybe all solids, or move to fruit only for a couple of days, have some nutrient drinks for a few days, increase your water intake, now NO FOOD FOR A FEW DAYS…ease into a fast and ease out of a fast…don’t suddenly stop and then start your normal diet. DO NOT SAY THAT YOU CANNOT FAST because of this or that…RUBBISH…if Jesus says to fast, then you can fast.

T.L Osborn used to teach that there was nothing, no sickness, no issue, no challenge or problem that could withstand an extended fast. So maybe you need to fast to be able to break through and really fast…

Perhaps start with 1 day, then 3 days, then aim for a whole week, so on and so on…

Perhaps make prayer and fasting part of your lifestyle, every Monday, twice a week, every third day, every second day…whatever you can make work for you…

…but don’t forget, IT’S PRAYER AND FASTING…

Let’s GO…
